Spay Clinic/Spay Station

The Spay Clinic
Caring for Cats’ spay/neuter clinic for stray and feral cats is located in Islamorada, Florida, and fully equipped like a veterinary office with the exception of an X-Ray machine, which is still on the wish list.
Caring for Cats holds 2-3 spay/neuter clinics per month, depending on the funds available, to perform spays and neuters for stray and feral cats trapped by Caring for Cats’ volunteers or residents of the Upper and Middle Florida Keys. Besides getting spayed/neutered, these felines will also get tested for feline leukemia, will receive full vaccinations as well as routine check ups and any medical assistance needed. All procedures are performed by a licenses veterinarian and veterinary technician and the cats will be released where they were trapped or into feral colonies. Adoptable cats are placed into foster homes or at the Kitty Cottage and made available for adoption.
Since Caring for Cats has to pay rent for the location of the spay clinic, pay the veterinary staff and for all medical supplies and procedures they completely rely on donations. Fundraisers like the Fur Ball and Rummage Sale will help to offset some of these expenses.
However, Caring for Cats is excited to announce that a new spay clinic will be coming soon, which will also help to reduce some of the expenses related to the spay/neuter program.
Me & My Sisters Gift Shop will close its doors for good on October 31, 2010, to turn the store into a veterinary and new spay clinic, which will open January/February 2011. Caring for Cats will have 2 new veterinarians in place who will offer veterinary services to cat and dog owners in the Florida Keys as well as will take part of Caring for Cats’s trap and spay/neuter program for stray and feral cats.
Caring for Cats and the new veterinarians will not only offer spay/neuter services to stray and feral cats trapped by residents of the Upper and Middle Keys but also to various animal rescue groups in the Florida Keys.
There are several ways you can help Caring for Cats with its spay/neuter program. Cash donations will help with the expenses related to medical supplies and procedures and paying our veterinary staff. Merchandise donations in form of medical supplies and cleaning supplies are always welcome. We also would greatly appreciate service donations. For example, if you are a vet technician or veterinarian and would like to offer your services free of charge during one of the spay clinics, Caring for Cats would love to hear from you.
If you would like more information on how you can help with the spay clinic, would like to make a donation, or schedule a feral or stray cat spay/neuter, please call 305-664-3660.
Thank you for all your help and support.
The Spay Station
Caring for Cats was found with the purpose to help reduce the overpopulation of stray and feral cats in the Upper and Middle Florida Keys by offering a trap and spay/neuter program. However, Caring for Cats would like the idea to extend this program to communities throughout the Florida Keys with a mobile spay station.
Mobile spay stations are used by many animal rescue groups and shelters throughout the United States. Just like the Red Cross mobile, the mobile spay station travels to different counties and cities to offer spay and neuter services. You can pretty much say that the spay station is a veterinary office on wheels with the purpose to perform as many cat and dog spays and neuters as possible. Low income households and shelters/animal rescue groups which do not have or only a limited spay/neuter program especially benefit from a spay station.
Most of the time mobile spay stations are converted RVs and motor coaches, which will get equipped with surgery/examination table, cages, storage cabinets, sink, microwave, small fridge, etc. But there are also companies throughout the United States which personalize and build spay stations from “scratch” to meet their customers’ needs.
Below are some pictures of a spay station, which was used by a shelter/rescue group in Nashville, Tennessee, and has performed over 44,000 spays and neuters. Caring for Cats does not have the funds available right now for a spay station but hopes that one day the dream of a spay station can come true.
